A tradition as old as cowboy boots themselves, the dance halls are an irrefutable Texas tradition. And the Broken Spoke is one of the oldest in the state!
Established in 1964, the Spoke is as authentic as they come. Unfamiliar with how to Texas 2-Step? Not to worry! The Broken Spoke offers dance lessons, completely open to the public. (Read more here on their website.) Once you’ve learned how to really do some boot-scootin’, all you need is a little music. Many well-known musicians have played in this legendary hall- from Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb to Kris Kristofferson and Katy Wills. George Strait and his Ace in the Hold band once took the stage. And in fact, Willie Nelson played at the Broken Spoke before he traded his crew cut and sport coat for braids and a bandana. Between the music, neon lights and old wooden dance floor, the Broken Spoke is one of the last remaining Austin Classics to remain untouched by the modernizing city.
